How Long Do Custom Orthotics Last? Signs It's Time to Replace Them

Custom orthotics are an investment in your feet, so it's natural to want to know how long they'll last. The honest answer is that it depends: on how many hours a day you wear them, what you do in them, what shoes they live in, and how you look after them. A pair worn for desk work and weekend walks will last much longer than a pair used for daily running or 12-hour shifts in work boots.

This guide explains what affects the lifespan of custom orthotics, the signs that a pair is wearing out, and simple habits that help them last longer.

What affects how long orthotics last?

How much you wear them

Hours of use matter more than calendar time. Orthotics worn all day, every day, take far more load than a pair used a few hours a week.

What you do in them

Running, jumping, and heavy lifting put more force through your orthotics than walking or standing. Long shifts on hard floors also add up quickly.

Your body weight and foot mechanics

More load per step means more wear. Feet that roll strongly inward or outward can also wear one area of the orthotic faster than others.

Materials

Firmer shell materials hold their shape longer than soft foams. The top cover, the layer your foot touches, usually wears out before the supportive shell underneath.

The shoes they're in

Orthotics in well-fitting shoes last longer. Shoes that are too tight can bend or crack an orthotic, while loose shoes let it slide around and wear unevenly.

How you care for them

Heat, moisture, and dirt all shorten an orthotic's life. A little care goes a long way.

Signs your orthotics need replacing

Check your orthotics every few months, especially if you use them heavily. Signs it may be time for a new pair include:

  • The arch has flattened or no longer springs back when you press on it.
  • Cracks, splits, or deep creases in the shell.
  • A worn-through or peeling top cover, or cushioning that has packed down.
  • Uneven wear, such as one side much more compressed than the other.
  • Your old symptoms are coming back, like heel pain, arch pain, or tired feet, even though you're wearing them.
  • New aches in your feet, knees, or lower back that weren't there before.
  • They no longer fit your shoes properly, or slide around inside them.

The return of old symptoms is often the clearest sign. If you got relief from your orthotics and the pain is creeping back, worn-out support is a likely reason.

Signs it's your shoes, not your orthotics

Sometimes the orthotic is fine but the shoe has broken down. If the heel of your shoe is crushed, the outsole is worn smooth, or the shoe leans to one side when you set it on a table, replace the shoe. A good orthotic can't do its job in a collapsed shoe. In general, shoes wear out faster than custom orthotics, so expect to move a pair of orthotics into new shoes at least once.

How to make your orthotics last longer

  • Let them air out. Take them out of your shoes after heavy use and let them dry at room temperature.
  • Keep them away from heat. Don't leave them in a hot car, on a radiator, or in direct sun, and never put them in a dryer. Heat can warp the shape.
  • Clean them gently. Wipe the top cover with a damp cloth and mild soap, then let them air dry. Don't soak them or put them in a washing machine.
  • Use the right shoes. Choose shoes with enough room and a removable insole, so the orthotic sits flat without bending.
  • Remove the shoe's original insole before inserting your orthotics, so they aren't squeezed.
  • Rotate pairs if you can. If you wear orthotics in work boots and sneakers, a dedicated pair for each spreads the wear and saves swapping.
  • Wear socks. They reduce moisture and friction on the top cover.

Heavy use: work boots and sport

If you work long shifts in boots or train hard, your orthotics will work harder than most. In these cases, it's worth checking them more often and paying attention to how your feet feel at the end of the day. The Heavy Duty Comfort orthotic is built for heavy boots and steel-toes, and sport styles like Running are designed for repeated impact. When your feet change

Sometimes a new pair is needed not because the orthotic wore out, but because your feet or needs changed. Weight changes, pregnancy, an injury, a new sport, or a new job with different footwear can all mean your old orthotics are no longer the best fit. If your feet feel different, or you've developed a new problem, it may be time for a fresh scan.

Replacing your orthotics

When it's time for a new pair, ordering from Fits Perfect is simple. Scan your feet with your iPhone in the Fits Perfect app, a fast, simple, and accurate 3D scan, or use the mail-in foam impression box if you don't have an iPhone. A fresh scan captures any changes in your feet. Every style is $249 with free shipping, and scan intake and manufacturing take 1-2 business days, followed by 5-7 days of shipping. Frequently asked questions

How long do custom orthotics usually last?

It depends on use, activity, and care. Heavy daily use wears them faster; lighter use lets them last much longer. Check them regularly rather than relying on a fixed date.

How do I know if my orthotics are worn out?

A flattened arch, cracks, a worn top cover, uneven wear, or the return of your old symptoms are all signs.

Can I clean my orthotics?

Yes. Wipe them with a damp cloth and mild soap and let them air dry. Avoid soaking, washing machines, and heat.

Should I replace my shoes or my orthotics?

Check both. Shoes usually wear out first, and a collapsed shoe can make good orthotics feel worse.
